The two-day Sgraffito workshop, co-organized with natural building expert Spiti Spitaki, brought together the traditional technique of lime plaster with a contemporary artistic approach.
Participants were trained in working with natural lime plaster and learned the decorative technique of sgraffito – a method of carving through layers of plaster to reveal textured, expressive designs underneath. The process was guided by the knowledge and long-standing experience of Spiti Spitaki in natural building techniques.
The artistic concept was inspired by the four classical elements – earth, water, fire, and air – and was developed into twelve original compositions, designed by Hut Creative Studio.
Participants were also trained in the creation of natural pigments using raw earth, and took an active role in preparing the paints used to color the final artworks. The pigments were made on-site with untreated soils from the island of Crete, highlighting the connection between artist and material.
The workshop became a dialogue between material and image, between knowledge and imagination — centered on shared experience and hands-on collaboration.
